Feedback Thoughts

This week I read 2 articles about Feedback for Learning. These were:

I found these two articles very useful and insightful and I love their approach and mindset of how receiving feedback should be!

Reading through the first article about Neil Gaiman's advice on the creative life I was intrigued by his advice of no matter how tough things are, just go and make good art. That no matter what you're going through be it good or bad you can go and make some good art out of it. I feel it give that mindset of looking at things from the bright side and taking just the positive. Another good point of his was going and making mistakes. The fact that if you're making mistakes it means you are going out and trying new things, you can't learn without trying new things and being ok with making mistakes. I really like this mindset and I'd want to implement it in my life more.

The second article I read was about how a fixed mindset could be holding you back. A few points that it went over was how children were told that they are great at everything, they were constantly praised and they self esteem rose to the point that they developed a fixed mindset. This is not that good as when they eventually came across making a mistake or being critisied they become brittle and don't take it well as they haven't come across things like this before. It's a great example of how having a fixed mindset leaves no space for growth. Whereas someone with a growth mindset will welcome mistakes and won't them them that hard, meaning they can learn from their mistakes and aren't scared to try new things.

Looking back over my many years as a student I'm glad to say I had and have more of a growth mindset, although I do feel sometimes I'm on a fixed mindset. I've always welcomed criticism and looked at what I could improve on, especially in sport while playing basketball, figure skating and athletics, I would always push myself to get further than last time and try out new techniques if older ones didn't work. An area where I do feel like I have to improve is when I personally criticise or give myself feedback, I don't always do it and when I do I'm quite tough on myself and then it kinda lowers my motivation. So that's definitely an area I can work more on.
